music is specially selected to create a diverse musical repertoire all with the intention to introduce children to the widest possible spectrum of music. By providing a diverse range of musical styles children learn, enjoy, and gain a fuller understanding of music and what it means to sing together. Young Voices also aspire to connect families through music and to share in the learning experience when children practice at home.

This year class 6 were lucky enough to get tickets to take part. There were some simple dance moves that were learned and performed whilst singing a large selection of different songs. The children and teachers particularly enjoyed the combination of dancing and singing, adding a fun, electric atmosphere to the concert. 

Nothing could prepare them  for the sound of thousands of children singing together. There was a full 7-piece live band made up of some of the UK’s leading musicians, backing singers, and the internationally acclaimed conductor David Lawrence. It made for one of the most exciting and memorable musical experiences you can imagine.

Children, teachers and parents had an amazing time and can't wait to hopefully go again next year.

    

    

    

Bedtime Stories

Again bedtime stories was a roaring success. Wednesday 30th Jan was a lovely opportunity for staff to share their favourite bedtime stories with the children, share hot chocolate and wear our pyjamas.

    

Class 2 trip - Rhondda Heritage Park

On Thursday 14th February, class 2 went to Rhondda Heritage Park.  This is the site of a coal mine and museum that ceased use in 1983. We were given a tour by Peter, an ex miner who had worked down the pit for 33 years since he was 15 years old.  He showed us all the equipment used and other interesting artefacts.  We all wore our hard hats and took a journey down into the mine, where we followed the paths underground and were showed the jobs done there, including those of children.  We then sat through a simulator ride where we were told lots more about the mines.  After we had to help Grandma with her washing the old fashioned way, using soap, scrubbing boards and a mangle.  Then we had a chance to explore the grounds and the museum.  It was a brilliant day and the children were fabulous.

    

    

    

The trip was good. My favourite bit was going down the mine.  I learned about the jobs of the children in the mine.  I wouldn't have like to work down there.

World Book Day

On Thursday 7th May the whole school took part in celebrating World Book Day.  We dressed up as our favourite words.  The children shared their favourite stories with the other children and the classes undertook reading and book activities.

Class R - Lambing Live

On Monday 11th March, Reception class went to visit a local farm belonging to Bill Quan.  The children saw lots of different animals, including lambs, pigs and chickens.  They even saw a lamb being born and got to hold a lamb.  After visiting the animals the children went on a woodland walk.  The children also hugged a tree which Prince Charles likes to do.

    

    

Comic Relief - Red Nose Day - Friday 15th March

The whole school took part in celebrating Comic Relief on Friday 15^th March. We dressed up in something red and many of us wore red noses. The children also held a cake sale and a talent show. We had lots of fun and raised £191.55.

Pontrilas Café

The children enjoyed their trip to Pontrilas Community Café on Thursday 21st March. They enjoyed arts and craft activities and milk shakes and cookies.

The café is run by CARE Herefordshire CIC, their aim is to combat loneliness and social isolation in rural communities by encouraging young generations to engage with older residents, their neighbours and relatives, helping them and witnessing the benefits of the volunteering has on their own community.

    

    

Classes R and 6 - Litter picking

On Wednesday 27th March classes R and 6 gathered litter from the village playing fields, surrounding lanes and hedgerows, as well as tackling the perimeter of the school.  Approximately six special 'stop the drop' litter bags were filled. Thank you to Balfour Beatty for the loan of the litter pickers.

    

    

Class 2 trip - Grosmont Castle

As part of our history topic, Class 2 went on a trip to Grosmont Castle on Tuesday 26th March.   We decided this was a Motte and Bailey castle as it has a moat, though this is no longer filled with water.  We explored the different areas of the castle ruins and discussed where certain parts would have been. We also went on a dragon egg hunt and made a wizard's potion.  We read stories about castles and dragons.  We walked the perimeter and climbed the stairs to view the castle from the top.  It was a beautiful day too.

    

    

 

Superhero day

On Friday 5th April children were invited to dress up as a Superhero, both real and fictional. We had a selection of Batman, Superman, Captain America, Wonder Woman and Iron Man as well as some real-life Superheroes such as Police Officers, Firefighters and Military personnel. We also had some personal heroes, such as famous stars and people we know. All the money raised goes towards a treat for each child at our end of year trip.

Easter service

We held our school Easter celebration yesterday (Thursday 11th April), in St Michael’s church. It was lovely to see so many of you attend to watch the children’s super performances of songs and poems, year 6 ukulele accompaniment as well as class 4 narration throughout. The whole school were wonderfully behaved and performed beautifully.

This was followed by the fantastic PTFA duck race. Thank you to all those who bought tickets and well done to the fabulous PTFA ladies who were in the river catching ducks.

Class 6 - Severn Valley Railway

On Friday 19th April class 6 went to visit the Severn Valley Railway. This railway is still in use and has been rebuilt.  Unfortunately the steam trains were not running that day.  It is also an interactive museum related to steam trains and also provides a World War Two experience.

The children had a very busy day. They worked with enactors, visited an Anderson shelter, used a mangle, experienced what is was like to be evacuated, helped sort the mail from the mail train, reacted to an air raid siren, visited King George VI's carriage, studied artefacts including ration books and witnessed Mrs Gething and Mrs Chesworth attempting to extinguish a bomb!

    

    

My favourite bit was going down the Anderson shelter.  It was exciting and scary.

Class 2 trip - Madley Environmental Centre

On Thursday 9th May, class 2 went on a trip to Madley Environmental Centre. Despite the initial wet weather we had a fabulous time.  We undertook a range of activities including pond dipping (Miss Wallace caught a newt), making pond creatures from mud, playing in the willows and hunting for colourful string caterpillars, bug hunting under rocks and logs, mini beast hunting in trees by shaking the branches onto a white sheet, making mirror photo frames with reflections from the trees and sky and playing guess the tree in partners where we blindfolded each other and had to guess which tree we touched. It was a brilliant day.  We all learned lots and had fun.

    

    

    

    

     

The trip was good. I enjoyed the pond dipping.  We caught lots of creatures.

Classes 4 and 6 - Sealife Centre, Birmingham

On Friday 17th May, classes 4 and 6 took a trip to the Sealife Centre in Birmingham, as part of their science topic on habitats. 

Following the lovely journey up they split into groups and had a walk around the centre.  They had the opportunity to touch a living starfish, looked at the range of aquatic life, learned about the giant turtle, took a behind the scenes tour, watched a 4D cinema film amongst other things. They saw stingrays, seahorses, starfish, turtles, penguins and many other wildlife.

The children were extremely well behaved and had a fantastic time.

    

    

    

I liked the turtles best.  I enjoyed learning about the turtle's story and watching it swim and eat.

Class R - Dan yr Ogof Show Caves

On Wednesday 22nd May our Reception class visited Dan yr Ogof Show Caves, near Swansea. They saw some huge replica dinosaurs, had a picnic with the dinosaurs, looked at stones that resembled fabric, explored caves, ran through an underground waterfall and learned that fish who live in caves don't have eyes! Everyone had a great time.

     

    

    

It was the best trip ever! The kids were awesome.  My favourite bit was the T-rex that roared!!!!

Ewyas Harold Festival of Arts

COMMUNITY spirit shone at Ewyas Harold's first ever Arts Festival which was a huge success attracting hundreds of people across the three days.

Running over the Bank Holiday weekend live music, demonstrations, children's story telling and displays took place in different locations across the village.

Venues also displayed a range of art forms for sale from local artists.

Gill Jinman, Chairman of the Festival of Arts, came up with the event as a way of showcasing local talent after previously holding art exhibitions at The Temple Bar Inn.

"It was an absolutely fantastic event and the idea worked really well," said Mrs Jinman.

"The whole idea of the festival was to showcase local talent and everybody involved was from the village or had a link to the village in some way. It's amazing how many artists there are and there is an extraordinary amount of creative people in the area.

"The atmosphere was fabulous and people helped and joined together so it was a real community event."

Mrs Jinman hopes that the event can now be ran every two or three years.

What started with the local primary school running their own scarecrow competition ended in 35 scarecrows appearing in the village with shops and businesses also getting involved.

One of the talking points from the Temple Bar Inn art exhibition was a four- metre long painting titled 'Heart of the Wood' by Richard Bavin which is being sold on behalf of the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust.

The painting includes contributions from 102 people and a dog whose paw prints can be seen on the artwork. It is still for sale and for more information email: bavin@madasafish.com.

     

     

Whole school trip - Cotswold Wildlife Park

On Thursday 18th July the whole school visited Cotswold Wildlife Park as at end of school year treat.  Each class had a talk from one of the zoo keepers involving a variety of animals and even some skulls and bones. We all explored the park and saw a variety of different wild animals. Each child had a trip on the train around the park and was treated to an ice cream by the PTFA.  All the children also had a goody bag to take home.  It was a lovely day and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

    

    

    

    

    

    

Harvest Festival

Our Harvest festival on Friday 19th October was super. The children all worked hard and made us all proud with their performances. It was lovely to see so many adults attend. Thank you to all who donated foodstuffs for the Hereford Open Door charity. The charity supports individuals and families who may be homeless or in financial need, by providing cooked breakfasts, some hot meals and food parcels to supplement low incomes. 

    

    

    

It was so lovely to see every child in school involved in the harvest.

Class R and 4 - Miracle in Town

Class R and 4 joined forces to perform their fantastic nativity called 'Miracle in town.' The acting and narrators were super and the singing was amazing.  They all did a brilliant job learning all their lines and the songs.  They all did a fantastic job and it was wonderful to watch.

   

    

Class 2 - Lights, Camel, Action!

Class 2 took a modern take on the nativity story in the style of Strictly Come Dancing named Lights, Camel, action! There was lots of humour as well as the traditional tale of Christmas.  The children were superb.  Their singing, dancing and acting was wonderful to watch and the children all worked really hard.  Great job class 2 (and Mrs Motley as the star).

    

    

    

    

Christmas Carol Concert

The children of Class 6 were responsible for leading our Carol Service in St Michael’s Church on Thursday 20^th December. They told us the story behind Christmas and narrated throughout.

The Carol Service also included songs from the Reception, Class 2 and Class 4 Christmas plays.

Mrs Ashmead and Mrs Prowse taught the children many different Christmas Carols and songs that were inserted between the readings to make our Carol Service special. The concert finale was a fantastic Christmas nativity addition of the famous Queen song Bohemian Rapsody. It was absolutely amazing.

Class 6  - Young Voices

On Thursday 28th February class 6 treated us to a number of songs they had performed at Birmingham NEC's Young Voices concert.  They sang their hearts out and had some super dance moves to go with them.  The children seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves as were the adults.  I can't wait to go next year.  I think the word used rather frequently was, "AWESOME!!!"

    

    

Class 2 - Henry VIII

On Thursday 14th March class 2 replicated the popular entertainment programme Take Me Out with the twist being that the eligible bachelor was King Henry VIII.  We have been studying him as part of our topic on the English monarchy.  Eleven lovely lasses heard from Henry's friends and family and were then left to decide if they would like to date him or not.  Following round four, one lady, Catherine Parr, was left and so she became Henry's next wife.  The children all worked really hard and were super.  We had lots of fun and the children learned lots too.

What a fantastic assembly today.

I love history and thought this was such a clever way to learn all about Henry Vlll and his wives. 

Sophie and me are planning to watch a program tonight all about him, as the work you have been doing in class has got her so interested. 

As a parent I know I speak for many of us,  that the hard work going into these by the staff, is clear to see in the enjoyment and enthusiasm of our children as they perform. They are a joy to watch.

Mother's day assembly

As always our Mother’s day assembly (Thursday 28th March) was super and each class contributed. Class R told us why they love their mums, class 2 recited a poem they had written, class 4 sang a funny song and class 6 sang the famous song, 'I'm a believer,' whilst all playing the ukulele. The school also sang a selection of songs. It was very touching and a wonderful way to say thank you to all the special ladies in our lives for all they do. Hope you all get spoiled rotten on Sunday.

    

    

Class R - Dinosaurs

On Thursday 20th June, class R delivered a fantastic assembly on their topic of dinosaurs. They gave us lots of facts, answered questions, told jokes and sang some super songs.  They talked about dinosaurs most of us had never heard of.  They are definitely experts. Well done class R, you were all super.

My favourite part was singing the songs and I loved my dinosaur costume.

Class 4 - Ancient Egyptians

Thursday 27th June saw class 4 deliver an amazing assembly about Ancient Egypt. Their costumes were superb and they told us lots of interesting (as well as disgusting) facts about the ancient Egyptians.  They had a super song they had learned too.  It was fantastic.  Well done class 4.

Class 6 - Superstan

Class 6 delivered their end of year performance on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th of July. The story of our hero Superstan was funny, informative, reflective and very well slick. The children worked their socks off and it was certainly worth it.  It was absolutely fantastic and they went out with a real bang!
